Last updated
This policy covers this website and the downloads served from it. It explains what we (“we”, “us”) collect and why. The short version: you can read every page and download the browser without giving us anything.
Reading the site
There are no accounts, no sign-in and no advertising or tracking cookies. The site sets no cookies at all for visitors. Our server keeps standard request logs (IP address, the page asked for, the browser’s user agent and the time) to keep the site running and to stop abuse, such as a flood of contact form submissions. Logs are kept for a short time and are not used to build profiles.
Downloading the browser
Downloading the .dmg is an ordinary file request, logged like any other page. We don’t ask for an email address to download.
The browser itself
Monok has no accounts and no telemetry: it doesn’t send us usage data, and your history, bookmarks, favorites and settings stay on your Mac. The browser makes these requests of its own, apart from the pages you open:
- Update check. At launch and once a day it fetches one JSON file, the signed update feed, from monok.io. That request is logged by our server like any other. If a newer version is listed, the browser shows an “Update” button; nothing downloads or installs until you click it, and the file comes from the address in our signed feed.
- Filter lists. Once a week it downloads the EasyList and EasyPrivacy filter lists from easylist.to, which is run by the EasyList authors, not by us.
Crash logs are written only to your Mac (in ~/Library/Logs) and listed on the browser’s About page. Nothing is sent.
Web pages are loaded by WebKit, the engine that comes with macOS. Searches you type go to the search engine you choose (Google, DuckDuckGo, Bing or a custom one), and the sites you visit see your requests as in any browser; their privacy policies apply to them.
The contact form
When you write to us we store your email address and message (both encrypted at rest), the subject, the names of any files you attach, your IP address and the time. The message and attachments are emailed to our inbox through Mailgun; attachments are not stored on our server. We use this only to answer you and to deal with abuse. We send you one confirmation email and then reply by email.
Who sees it
The site and its database run on our own server. We share data only with the services that run the site (hosting and Mailgun for email), or when the law requires it. We never sell data or use it for ads.
How long we keep it
Contact messages are kept while the conversation is useful and deleted on request. Server logs roll over within 30 days, and so do backups.
Your rights
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it or to delete it. Write to us with the contact form or by email and we’ll answer.
Children
The site is not aimed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we’ll update the date above.
